genexus — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects AI clients to GeneXus Knowledge Bases to read, edit, and refactor objects. Works with modern SDKs and legacy installations.
claude mcp add genexus -- npx -y genexus-mcpWhat genexus does
This MCP server communicates with Knowledge Base files using the actual GeneXus SDK rather than parsing text dumps. It treats GeneXus 18 as its primary target, while also providing native SDK support for GeneXus 16 and 17. Legacy editions like Evolution 1 through 3 and GeneXus 15 run through a runtime reflection adapter.
Classic GeneXus 8.0 and 9.0 setups rely on 32-bit GXPublic COM adapters. Because of that architecture, legacy 8 and 9 configurations only expose metadata, without source editing parity. When you point the configuration to another SDK or directory via init, restart the AI client process to reload schemas.
What it helps with
- inspect attributes across Knowledge Base transactions
- append validation rules to transactions
- refactor legacy procedures to target modern SDTs
- verify installed SDK compatibility against
.gxwfiles
Example prompts for the agent
- List all transactions that contain the CustomerId attribute.
- Add a validation rule for the total field inside the Order transaction.
- Run genexus-mcp doctor to check the SDK version against my Knowledge Base.

Questions about genexus
How to install genexus in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add genexus -- npx -y genexus-mcp in your command line.
What does the genexus MCP server do?
It gives AI agents direct access to GeneXus Knowledge Bases through the official SDK or fallback drivers. Assistants can inspect schemas, edit business logic, and validate object definitions.
Can it edit Knowledge Bases from GeneXus 8 or 9?
No, editing code is restricted to versions with SDK or reflection support. Generations 8.0 and 9.0 connect via GXPublic OLE DB adapters, which only handle core metadata tasks.
