Frugal Blender MCP — Claude Code MCP server: setup and overview
Connects coding agents to Blender via four tools, keeping baseline context consumption at 338 tokens through lazy schemas and request batching.
claude mcp add frugal-blender-mcp -- uvx frugal-blender-mcpWhat Frugal Blender MCP does
This server bridges AI agents in Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor with Blender 4.2 or newer. Common integrations register dozens of individual tools that eat up prompt context on every request. Frugal Blender exposes just four: discover, execute, inspect, and capture. The agent looks up parameter requirements on demand instead of loading them up front.
Batching handles scene assembly without round-trip lag. A single execute call packs up to 100 discrete operations, such as positioning meshes, tuning materials, shifting cameras, or setting keyframes. When predefined operations fall short, the built-in python step runs arbitrary bpy routines directly on Blender's main thread. Visual confirmation comes back through capture images rather than massive scene graph text dumps.
The server requires an active bridge inside Blender before any commands can run. You must install the companion add-on via uvx, activate it in user preferences, and press the bridge button in the 3D Viewport sidebar.
What it helps with
- Build 3D environments from text prompts without bloating context limits
- Batch transforms, modifiers, and material assignments in one prompt
- Set animation keyframes and adjust scene lighting automatically
- Run custom Python routines through bpy directly from the agent chat
Example prompts for the agent
- Construct a low-poly island with a lighthouse and return a capture preview.
- Distribute 80 stones across the terrain and assign a rough rock shader to each.
- Inspect current scene objects and delete any unlinked geometry.

Questions about Frugal Blender MCP
How do I install Frugal Blender MCP in Claude Code?
Run uvx frugal-blender-mcp install-addon, enable the add-on in Blender preferences, and click Start bridge in the 3D Viewport sidebar. Then connect the server using claude mcp add frugal-blender-mcp -- uvx frugal-blender-mcp.
Why does Frugal Blender MCP expose only four tools?
Tool definitions consume context on every interaction. Limiting the static list to four functions and fetching operation schemas via discover keeps the fixed footprint at 338 tokens.
What software is needed to run Frugal Blender MCP?
You need Blender 4.2 or newer along with Astral's uv installed on your system.
