dnd-oracle — Claude Code MCP server for D&D 5e SRD lookups
An MCP server with 20 tools for searching D&D 5e SRD monsters, spells and gear, plus encounter math. The database ships locally, so no internet is needed.
claude mcp add dnd-oracle -- npx -y dnd-oracleWhat dnd-oracle does
The server hands your agent a bundled SRD 5.1 dataset: monsters, spells, equipment, magic items, classes, races, conditions, rules sections and random tables. Six tools cover reference lookups. The other fourteen do arithmetic — XP budgets for encounters, spell slots, a resistance matrix across a monster group, gear weight and cost, damage per round, travel time, what a rest restores.
Everything runs against a SQLite file inside the package. Answers come from that fixed dataset rather than from model memory. Node.js 18 or newer is required, and the process starts with npx -y dnd-oracle.
On Claude the install is a single line: claude mcp add dnd-oracle -- npx -y dnd-oracle. Cursor and GitHub Copilot take a manual stdio entry in their config files with the same command. The SRD 5.1 material is licensed CC-BY-4.0; the package itself is MIT.
What it helps with
- pull a monster stat block by type, size and challenge rating
- list the spells a class can cast at a given level with slots and concentration
- work out an XP budget and pick monsters that fit the difficulty
- collect resistances and immunities for a whole monster group
- check total weight, cost and AC from an equipment list
Example prompts for the agent
- Find every monster with challenge rating 5 and show me the stat blocks
- Build a medium-difficulty encounter for four level 3 characters
- Which spells does a level 7 wizard have, and which need concentration?
