What devcoach does

devcoach attaches to your agent workflow after completed assignments. Once a task finishes, a pacing check triggers the coaching skill. The server tracks concepts you already understand, filters out duplicate topics, and renders a concise lesson card directly in the stream.

Everything runs on your local machine. All learning logs stay in a SQLite database at ~/.devcoach/coaching.db. Under the hood, the server relies on the TypeScript MCP SDK, Commander, Hono for the browser dashboard, and the embedded node:sqlite package. No telemetry leaves the computer.

You must have Node.js 24 or newer installed. On older runtimes, the embedded node:sqlite module is missing, which causes the process to crash immediately. Local stdio transport also means browser-only environments like claude.ai web will not connect.

What it helps with

  • Learn unfamiliar technical concepts from agent-generated code
  • Track mastered software topics inside a local database
  • Review coaching summaries through a local web dashboard
  • Generate step-by-step tutorials from complex coding lessons

Example prompts for the agent

  • Launch the coaching dashboard with /devcoach:ui
  • Build a step-by-step tutorial from the latest topic via /devcoach:course
  • Export saved coaching sessions using /devcoach:share

Run claude mcp add devcoach -- npx -y devcoach in your terminal. Ensure your system runs Node.js 24 or later before adding the server.

What does devcoach do?

It creates short technical lessons immediately after your AI assistant finishes a task. The tool maintains a local history to avoid re-teaching concepts you already know.

Why is Node.js 24 required?

devcoach relies on Node's built-in node:sqlite module for local storage. That module exists natively only in Node.js release 24 and above.
