What Devart MCP Server for SQL Server (ADO.NET) does

This server acts as a bridge between LLM tools and SQL Server databases. Built on Devart dotConnect for SQL Server, it processes natural-language instructions, turns them into database queries, and passes structured records back to the model. The ADO.NET edition pulls its required NuGet dependencies automatically when compiled with the .NET 8 SDK.

Database credentials and transport parameters live in an mcpserver.json file. Connections run over standard I/O or http. Because Devart drivers enforce licensing, a valid License Key parameter inside the connection string is strictly required for the server to operate. When configured for http, the server must be launched manually with Devart.AI.McpServer.AdoNet.SqlServer.exe run <connection_name>.

What it helps with

  • query and mutate SQL Server records directly from AI chat sessions
  • inspect database schema definitions and relationships without manual SQL scripts
  • extract business data reports through plain text instructions
  • interface with local or remote SQL Server instances over stdio or http

Example prompts for the agent

  • Show the 10 most recent orders from the Orders table where status is Delivered
  • Inspect the schema of the Customers table and list all foreign keys
  • Calculate total revenue for the previous month in the my_sqlserver database
