dbx — Claude Code MCP server: query databases from your agent
An MCP server that lets an AI agent run database queries through connections already configured in DBX.
claude mcp add dbx -- npx -y @dbx-app/mcp-serverWhat dbx does
DBX is a database app with a desktop build, Docker, CLI and a built-in AI assistant. The MCP server hands that data access to your agent, so you can write queries in the Claude, Codex or Cursor chat instead of switching windows.
The server starts with npx -y @dbx-app/mcp-server over stdio. Connections come from your DBX setup, which means no connection strings or credentials get copied into the agent config. Set those connections up in DBX first — the server has nothing to expose without them.
DBX lists support for over 100 databases and ships in about 25 MB. Supported clients include Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Cline and Zed.
What it helps with
- run a SQL query from the agent chat
- inspect table schemas without opening a separate client
- check live data against code while debugging
- pull a result set to test a hypothesis
- give an agent database access without copying connection strings
Example prompts for the agent
- show me the schema of the users table
- run a query for the latest orders and show the result
- execute this query and explain what came back

Questions about dbx
How do I install dbx in Claude?
Run claude mcp add dbx -- npx -y @dbx-app/mcp-server. The server then shows up in your Claude MCP list.
What does dbx do?
It gives an AI agent access to databases through connections configured in the DBX app. Queries run from the chat, no separate client needed.
Do I need to configure connections first?
Yes. The server uses connections already set up in DBX, so add your database there before starting it.
