hunch · davesheffer — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
hunch stores project decisions, bug history, rules, and open work in Git so AI agents can share the same record across sessions.
claude mcp add hunch -- npx -y @davesheffer/hunchWhat hunch does
hunch gives agents a shared project record. It stores the reasons behind code, rejected approaches, past fixes, current findings, and unfinished commitments in Git, then exposes relevant entries through MCP. The server can also relate memory to code symbols and dependencies, check recorded constraints, and separate reported work from observed command results.
Run hunch init in a repository to index the code, configure supported integrations, and add memory instructions without replacing existing settings. The setup requires Node 22.13+ and a Git repository. Without either requirement, hunch will not start. Memory is advisory by default; blocking changes needs a trusted rule and strict enforcement.
Daily commands include hunch context, hunch why, hunch impact, hunch check, hunch conform, hunch now, and hunch doctor. The server can be connected to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, Zed, or Gemini CLI.
What it helps with
- record architectural decisions in Git
- trace the reason behind an old bug
- prepare focused task context for an agent
- check working changes against stored rules
- review commitments left by earlier sessions
Example prompts for the agent
- Use hunch to explain why
src/auth.tsis structured this way before I edit it. - Create a focused brief for fixing logout with
hunch context. - Run
hunch check --workingand report conflicts with the recorded rules.

Questions about hunch
How do I install hunch in Claude Code?
Install Node 22.13+, open a Git repository, and run claude mcp add hunch -- npx -y @davesheffer/hunch. Then restart Claude Code.
What does hunch do?
It keeps project decisions, bug history, rules, and open commitments in Git, then gives relevant records to AI agents through MCP. Its CLI also exposes context, change impact, and rule checks.
Which assistants can connect to hunch?
The listed integrations include Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, Zed, and Gemini CLI alongside Claude Code. Context delivery and hook coverage differ by assistant, so an MCP connection alone does not confirm that those features are active.
