What Cartographer does

Cartographer stores a knowledge base as a git repo of Markdown and YAML files, readable in Obsidian or any editor. Agents touch it only through MCP tools, so broken links and silent corruption don't get in. Each write becomes a single commit; schema checks, lint and an audit log run alongside.

The same repo carries the agent setup: skills, subagents, hooks and standing instructions, delivered to each client in its native format. Change it once and the machines agree again. The binary also serves the Atlas, a read-only web view of the graph with search and a list of findings.

You need Docker and an empty git repository you own for the first base. The project is pre-1.0: breaking changes bump the minor version and get named in the changelog. Secrets sit encrypted with SOPS and are resolved when a concept refers to them.

What it helps with

  • keep one wiki that agents from several developers add to
  • find broken links and stale notes in a knowledge base
  • ship skills and hooks to every client from one place
  • keep a commit history of what agents changed
  • use a stored secret without putting it in plaintext

Example prompts for the agent

  • Check the knowledge base: what is broken, stale or missing?
  • Add a note about why staging fails to the shared wiki
  • Which skills, subagents and hooks does this base give my agent?
