ContextStream — Claude Code MCP server: memory across sessions
A hosted MCP server that gives your agent access to code, docs and saved project decisions. Useful when a fresh session starts from nothing.
claude mcp add --transport http mcp 'https://mcp.contextstream.io/mcp?default_context_mode=fast&src=registry'What ContextStream does
ContextStream connects an agent to your code, documentation and earlier conversations. The agent locates the files it needs, pulls up decisions you stored before, and continues from previous work even when you move between tools. Indexing supplies code context; decisions nobody wrote down stay lost.
Two ways in. The local installer fetches a native Rust build and checks its SHA-256 checksum, while the npm route expects Node.js 20+. Or point your client at the hosted endpoint https://mcp.contextstream.io/mcp?default_context_mode=fast, which speaks Streamable HTTP and OAuth. A hosted connection on its own does not sync your local checkout, so think about how your code is reached before you rely on it.
Indexing ships eligible source contents to ContextStream for hosted search. Saving transcripts and capturing local Git metadata both start enabled and you can switch them off. In scripts and CI, wrap the install in pipefail — otherwise a failed download can still report success. setup --yes reads the key from CONTEXTSTREAM_API_KEY or saved credentials, and needs --workspace-id when the account holds more than one workspace.
What it helps with
- locate the files a coming change touches
- recall a stored project decision in a new session
- keep code and docs context in one place
- share the same context across several editors
- review what leaves your machine before indexing a sensitive project
Example prompts for the agent
- Save this decision and the reason we made it.
- Retrieve the saved project decisions before I start.

Questions about ContextStream
How do I install ContextStream in Claude Code?
Add the hosted endpoint with claude mcp add --transport http contextstream https://mcp.contextstream.io/mcp?default_context_mode=fast&src=registry, then restart your editor.
What does ContextStream do?
It gives an agent persistent memory: code search, access to docs and stored project decisions that carry across sessions and tools.
What does ContextStream need to run?
Either the local installer or a hosted connection over Streamable HTTP and OAuth. The npm route requires Node.js 20+, and setup --yes wants a key in CONTEXTSTREAM_API_KEY plus --workspace-id if the account has several workspaces.
