aidex — Claude Code MCP server: code index and memory
A local MCP server that keeps a project index, answers identifier and concept queries, and stores tasks and session notes. Useful when your agent keeps re-reading files.
claude mcp add aidex -- npx -y aidex-mcpWhat aidex does
aidex builds an index of your repository so the assistant can ask where something is defined, which methods a file holds, or what changed recently, instead of opening files one by one. Retrieval comes in three modes: exact identifier match, vector search over meaning, and a hybrid that fuses both rankings. Code, docs and workspace items all land in the same index.
The server ships 33 tools. Among them: project indexing, signatures, file tree, search across every indexed repository, a task backlog with priorities, session notes, an HTTP log receiver, and screenshots with colour reduction. A browser viewer shows the file tree, tasks and logs with live reload. Parsing covers C#, TypeScript, JavaScript, Rust, Python, C, C++, Java, Go, PHP, Ruby, HCL/Terraform, Kotlin, Swift and Astro frontmatter.
Node.js 20 or newer is required, since the server runs through npx. Semantic retrieval relies on embeddings computed locally. An optional LLM layer handles queries written in other languages and reorders the hits; skip it and non-English phrasing will match less well.
What it helps with
- locate a definition without opening dozens of files
- list a class's methods without reading the whole file
- see what changed in the code in the last couple of hours
- find a function by description when the name escapes you
- carry a note from one session into the next
Example prompts for the agent
- Find where
PlayerHealthis defined and show only the declaration lines - List the method signatures in
src/Engine.cs - What changed in this project over the last two hours?

Questions about aidex
How do I install aidex in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add aidex -- npx -y aidex-mcp.
What does aidex do?
It maintains a persistent index of your project and serves the assistant identifier lookups, signatures, tasks and notes. Querying that index costs far less context than reading files or grepping.
What do I need to run it?
Node.js 20 or newer, because the server is launched with npx. Semantic search uses locally computed embeddings; translation of non-English queries and reranking come from a separate optional LLM layer.
