What mcp does

The server gives local coding assistants an output layer for operations models cannot perform directly. Instead of cluttering the prompt with dozens of endpoints, it starts lean with five core tools. The model locates actions via find_tool, runs tasks through run_operation, or activates specific tools with enable_tools. It keeps context overhead minimal. Over 40 file operations are supported, including HTML-to-PDF rendering, Office conversion, and C2PA credentials.

Inputs come from local disk paths, while outputs land in a specified directory or a system temp folder. Node 18+ is required to execute the package via npx. The service includes 100 complimentary operations, after which each successful action costs $0.01.

What it helps with

  • render HTML or Markdown into PDF documents
  • extract tabular data and XML invoices from PDF files
  • scrub metadata and sensitive text from documents
  • convert Office files like DOCX or XLSX to Markdown

Example prompts for the agent

  • Convert specs.docx into Markdown and save it locally
  • Redact private customer information from invoice.pdf
  • Render the current Markdown draft into a styled PDF

Questions about mcp

How do I install mcp in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add mcp -e BIGAPI_KEY=<BIGAPI_KEY> -- npx -y @bigapi/mcp in your console. You can provide an existing key or generate one through the server during runtime.

What does mcp do?

It handles complex file transformations that large language models cannot run internally. Agents use it to merge PDFs, run OCR scans, generate charts, and inspect file metadata.

Why does the server only expose five tools by default?

Loading dozens of tool definitions consumes context space and degrades tool-calling accuracy. The compact tool set keeps prompts small while granting access to every operation via run_operation.
