Agent Wikis — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects coding agents to structured knowledge bases with confidence signals and source tracking. Runs for free without an account.
claude mcp add --env AGENTWIKIS_URL=<AGENTWIKIS_URL> --env AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY=<AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY> --transport stdio agent-wikis -- npx -y agentwikis-mcpWhat Agent Wikis does
The server exposes four read-only tools: list_wikis, open_wiki, search, and read_document. Rather than returning documents blindly, its search tool sets a confident parameter to false whenever an inquiry exceeds documented scope. That signal instructs the assistant to fall back to broad search rather than guessing facts.
Content is organized into general reference pages and deep-dive XL materials. The core tier requires no credentials. Querying an XL document without defining AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY returns an HTTP 402 code. Teams hosting internal documentation instances can point traffic to their private setup with AGENTWIKIS_URL.
Without Node 18+ in your environment the package crashes immediately.
What it helps with
- retrieve structured technical reference docs inside an agent loop
- detect missing documentation coverage through calibrated search signals
- read specific documentation sections alongside source attribution
- connect an agent to a self-hosted documentation endpoint
Example prompts for the agent
- Look up the CLI setup steps in Agent Wikis and show the relevant section
- Search the wiki index for deployment guidance and verify the confidence score
- Inspect the available wiki catalogue and summarize scope coverage

Questions about Agent Wikis
How do I install Agent Wikis in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add agentwikis-mcp -e AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY=<AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY> -- npx -y agentwikis-mcp in your terminal. If you use only the free tier, omit the environment key flag.
What does Agent Wikis do?
It lets coding assistants consult curated, agent-readable technical manuals. It formats results with document scopes and confidence flags so the model avoids hallucinating missing concepts.
Is an API key required to run Agent Wikis?
No, standard pages are accessible without accounts or tokens. Setting AGENTWIKIS_API_KEY is only necessary if you intend to read the deeper XL tier pages.
