scrutinize — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
An outsider-perspective review skill for plans, pull requests, and diffs. It challenges intent first, traces execution paths beyond the diff, and flags structural flaws.
npx skills add thananon/9arm-skills --skill scrutinize -a claude-codeWhat scrutinize does
The skill reviews code changes without deference to the author. It proceeds across four sequential steps. First, the agent defines the core goal in a single sentence and checks whether existing codebase features could solve the problem with less risk. If a simpler architecture exists, the agent surfaces that alternative before reading individual lines.
Execution tracing comes next. The agent tracks the full call chain through unchanged code, state changes, and branch logic. Bugs cluster at the seams. This step helps expose hidden assumptions between modified lines and adjacent modules.
Every finding in the final report cites specific files and line numbers. The skill skips superficial style nits whenever architectural problems exist. Generic rubber-stamp comments like "LGTM" are banned. A single-sentence verdict closes the review: ship, fix-then-ship, rework, or reject.
What it helps with
- audit pull requests and design docs from an outsider perspective
- identify simpler architectural alternatives before line-by-line review
- trace execution paths across unchanged code and module boundaries
- verify test coverage against real failure states and inputs
Example prompts for the agent
- /scrutinize
- Run /scrutinize on this pull request to trace edge cases and test gaps
- Audit this design doc and check if a simpler solution already exists in the repo

Questions about scrutinize
How to install scrutinize in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add thananon/9arm-skills --skill scrutinize -a claude-code in your terminal to install the skill.
What does the scrutinize skill do?
It audits pull requests, design documents, and diffs from an outside viewpoint. The skill evaluates whether the change is necessary, traces the full execution path, and delivers an evidence-based report.
How does scrutinize differ from standard diff reviews?
Standard diff tools inspect only modified lines, while scrutinize traces full call paths through existing codebase logic. It checks edge cases, test validity, and always searches for simpler alternatives first.
