index · openai — Claude skill: routing analytics requests
Sorts a broad data request and sends it to the right Data Analytics workflow. Useful when you don't know which skill to pick.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill index -a codexWhat index does
This is the entry point for the Data Analytics plugin. The skill reads the request and decides whether it counts as analytics at all: does it need structured records, numeric measures, a dashboard definition, or a product decision backed by evidence. If yes, it picks the narrowest focused skill. If the job is plain drafting, formatting or layout, the route never lands here.
Runtime rules are part of the package. The skill classifies surface and mode from positive system or developer signals, not from file paths or which tools happen to be available. For Claude on the web in Chat mode there is a stop gate: on the first turn it asks you to switch to Work Mode, where analytics performs better. You can stay in Chat, but only if you say so explicitly.
Other branches cover disputes over which metric or dashboard is the source of truth, and requests about launches, segmentation and A/B readouts. When a task needs context collected before any numbers, the skill loads $gather-business-context and then the relevant analysis skill, plus $build-report for a report. Worth installing if you use the Data Analytics plugin in Claude and keep guessing at the right skill. No analytics in your work? Skip it.
What it helps with
- pick the right analytics skill for a given request
- separate data-backed work from tasks that need no evidence
- settle which metric definition should govern a decision
- collect business context before running the analysis
- know when to move from Chat into Work Mode
Example prompts for the agent
- Data Analytics: compute retention by cohort for the quarter
- read the A/B test results and tell me whether to ship
- the teams disagree on ARR — figure out which definition should win

Questions about index
How do I install index in Claude?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill index, or target the agent directly with npx skills add openai/plugins --skill index -a codex. The skill file lands in .agents/skills/index/SKILL.md.
What does the index skill do?
It routes Data Analytics plugin requests to the right focused workflow. It does not run the analysis itself.
When does index not apply?
When the task is ordinary drafting, formatting or conversion with no data or metrics behind it. Analytics-sounding words alone are not enough.
