grow-sustainably — Claude Code skill: a profitability advisor
Reviews spending, hiring, fundraising and scaling through profitable growth. Useful when you weigh a new office, a hire or a round.
npx skills add slavingia/skills --skill grow-sustainably -a claude-codeWhat grow-sustainably does
This skill turns the assistant into a business advisor built around Sahil Lavingia's “The Minimalist Entrepreneur”. Every decision gets checked against four things: what it does to profit, whether you can undo it, whether a customer need drives it, and whether a cheaper option exists. The rule set starts from profit = revenue minus costs, then splits costs into variable and fixed.
Hiring, fundraising and burnout each get their own section. The advice leans on software before people, remote work over an office, and freelancers before full-time staff. On pay, it suggests keeping your own salary low early and raising it as revenue allows. On investors, reach profitability first — that gives you leverage and keeps dilution down.
There is also a part on co-founders: talk through goals, growth pace and exit terms before you start, and use vesting. The skill does not run your numbers or read your books. What you get is a structured review of a decision, including the default alive or default dead test.
What it helps with
- decide between hiring someone and covering the task with software
- check whether the company can carry a new office or a fixed salary
- work out whether to raise money or reach profit first
- separate reversible choices from irreversible ones before signing
- settle growth pace and exit terms with a co-founder
Example prompts for the agent
- Should we hire a second developer this quarter?
- Walk through the grow-sustainably checklist on signing a two-year office lease
- We're considering a round — evaluate it with grow-sustainably
