cover-letter-generator — Claude Code skill: tailored cover letters
Turns a resume and a job posting into a cover letter: a real opening hook, your experience mapped to their requirements, gaps handled head-on. Useful when the application goes out today.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill career/cover-letter-generatorWhat cover-letter-generator does
The skill takes your resume plus the job description and drafts a letter of 250–400 words across three or four paragraphs. The layout is fixed: contact block, date, salutation, a hook, two paragraphs of evidence, a close with a next step, sign-off. Tone shifts with the company rather than staying generic.
For the opening it offers several angles — something specific about the company, a shared contact, a problem named in the posting, a result with numbers, a read on the industry. Body paragraphs follow a simple pattern: their need, your matching experience, the outcome. Where a qualification is thin, the skill suggests naming it in the letter instead of hiding it.
The author's guidance is to run it after you have analysed the posting, so the talking points already exist. Separate notes cover tech, marketing and finance roles, and the difference between a startup and a large employer. Read the draft before sending: achievements and figures come from your resume, and you are the one who has to stand behind them.
What it helps with
- write an application letter aimed at one specific role
- tie your background to the requirements listed in the posting
- handle a missing skill without sounding defensive
- open the letter without the usual “I am writing to apply”
- match the register to a startup or a large company
Example prompts for the agent
- Write a cover letter from this resume and job posting, use their recent launch as the hook
- Keep it to 300 words and address my missing SQL experience in the second paragraph
- Rewrite the opening so it leads with their problem, not with me
