What java-development does

The plugin adds four slash commands to GitHub Copilot. /java-development:java-docs checks that Java types carry Javadoc comments and points out how to shape the documentation. /java-development:java-junit covers JUnit 5 unit testing, data-driven tests included. /java-development:java-springboot gives guidance for building Spring Boot applications.

There is also /java-development:create-spring-boot-java-project, which scaffolds a Spring Boot Java project. Installation is a single step through Copilot CLI: copilot plugin install java-development@awesome-copilot. Nothing else to configure.

The plugin lives in the awesome-copilot repository, a community collection of GitHub Copilot extensions, under the MIT license. The commands do not build or edit your code on their own — they hand the agent rules and suggestions it applies inside your project. If you expect automatic refactoring or test runs, that is a reason to read what each command actually does before installing.

What it helps with

  • document Java types with Javadoc comments
  • write JUnit 5 unit tests with data-driven cases
  • scaffold a Spring Boot Java project
  • get Spring Boot development guidance
  • keep Java documentation consistent across a codebase

Example prompts for the agent

  • /java-development:java-docs — check the documentation in this package
  • /java-development:java-junit — show me how to structure JUnit 5 tests
  • /java-development:create-spring-boot-java-project — scaffold a new project
