321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests — Claude Code skill
A skill that steers your agent through Spring Boot unit testing: Mockito without a Spring context, slice tests for controllers, parameterized tests. Useful when @SpringBootTest has spread everywhere.
npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests -a claude-codeWhat 321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests does
The skill lays out how to write Spring Boot unit tests with Mockito. Pure tests for @Service and @Component use @ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class), @Mock and @InjectMocks, so no Spring context starts. Controllers get @WebMvcTest slices with @MockitoBean, and JSON serialization is checked with @JsonTest and value assertions such as extractingJsonPathStringValue.
Inside are rules plus good and bad code examples: parameterized tests with @CsvSource or @MethodSource instead of copy-pasted methods, @TestConfiguration, @ActiveProfiles, and fixed-clock beans for deterministic setup. The mocking API is the modern one — @MockitoBean and @MockitoSpyBean — because @MockBean and @SpyBean are removed in Boot 4.0.x.
The skill insists the project compiles before any edit: run ./mvnw compile or mvn compile first, stop on failure, then run ./mvnw clean verify afterwards. If the request scope is ambiguous or files and tooling are missing, the agent is told to stop and ask. Integration tests live in @322-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-integration-tests; framework-agnostic Java is covered by @131-java-testing-unit-testing.
What it helps with
- write Mockito tests for a service without booting a Spring context
- swap
@SpringBootTestfor a@WebMvcTestslice on a controller - collapse repeated test methods into one parameterized test
- verify JSON serialization with
@JsonTest - migrate tests off the removed
@MockBeanto@MockitoBean
Example prompts for the agent
- Write Mockito unit tests for this
@Service, no Spring context - Replace
@SpringBootTestwith@WebMvcTestand@MockitoBeanin these controller tests - Turn these three near-identical tests into one
@ParameterizedTestwith@CsvSource

Questions about 321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests
How do I install 321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests in Claude?
Run npx skills add jabrena/plinth --skill 321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests/SKILL.md.
What does this skill do?
It gives the agent rules for Spring Boot unit testing with Mockito: pure tests for services, slice tests for controllers, @JsonTest, parameterized tests, and setup via @TestConfiguration.
How is it different from the integration-test and Java skills?
This one covers Spring Boot unit tests. Integration tests are handled by @322-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-integration-tests, and framework-agnostic Java by @131-java-testing-unit-testing.

For integration tests use @322-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-integration-tests. ## Constraints Before applying any test changes, ensure the project compiles. If compilation fails, stop immediately. After applying improvements, run full verification. - **MANDATORY**: Run `./mvnw compile` or `mvn compile` before applying any change - **SAFETY**: If compilation fails, stop immediately - **VERIFY**: Run `./mvnw clean verify` or `mvn clean verify` after applying improvements - **BEFORE APPLYING**: Read the reference for detailed rules and good/bad patterns - **EDGE CASE**: If request scope is ambiguous, stop and ask a clarifying question before applying changes - **EDGE CASE**: If required inputs, files, or tooling are missing, report what is missing and ask whether to proceed with setup guidance ## When to use this skill - Review Java code for Spring Boot unit tests - Apply best practices for Spring Boot unit tests in Java code - Write Mockito-first unit tests for Spring Boot services - Avoid unnecessary @SpringBootTest in Spring unit tests - Review Spring Boot slice-free unit test design ## Workflow 1. **Read reference and assess project context** Read `references/321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests.md` and inspect the current project setup before proposing changes. 2. **Gather scope and decide target improvements** Identify requested outcomes, constraints, and the minimum safe set of changes to apply. 3. **Apply framework-aligned changes** Implement or refactor configuration/code following the reference patterns and project conventions. 4. **Run verification and report results** Execute appropriate build/tests and summarize what changed, what was verified, and any follow-up actions. ## Reference For detailed guidance, examples, and constraints, see [references/321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests.md](references/321-frameworks-spring-boot-testing-unit-tests.md).
