Word AI — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Modifies Word DOCX files with atomic patches while preserving styles, tables, and numbering intact. Useful for safe agentic document updates without markup distortion.
Open on GitHubWhat Word AI does
Exporting Word files to Markdown and back routinely damages numbering, nested tables, and styles. Word AI keeps the original DOCX layout intact. Instead of rewriting entire archives, the agent dispatches targeted PatchSet instructions. The system verifies SHA-256 hashes before altering any XML node.
The server includes 63 MCP tools covering comments, tracked changes, bookmarks, and structural blocks. Offline processing runs on a .NET 8 Open XML backend wrapped by a Python interface. For documents open on the desktop, an Office.js taskpane communicates with a local HTTP bridge.
Compiling the transaction engine locally demands .NET SDK 8. Ready-made standalone release bundles bypass this requirement entirely. Direct file overwriting without dry runs and diff generation is blocked by default.
What it helps with
- update DOCX files without breaking layout and typography
- verify text hashes prior to applying document edits
- control active Microsoft Word sessions via Office.js
- roll back failed patches using audit logs and diffs
Example prompts for the agent
- Update the overview section inside
spec.docxafter confirming text hashes. - Inspect table structures in the active Word session and generate a
PatchSet. - Run a dry-run patch for the
WORD-AI:SRS:1.0:overviewtag incontract.docx.
