TypeDB — Cursor MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects AI assistants to TypeDB databases using the Model Context Protocol. Runs TypeQL queries, updates schemas, and manages databases from the editor.
Open on GitHubWhat TypeDB does
This server bridges AI agents and TypeDB instances via MCP. The model can dispatch TypeQL statements to read, insert, or modify schema definitions. It also handles operational duties like creating or wiping databases and provisioning users.
Delivery is handled through the typedb/typedb-mcp Docker image. Launching it requires your TypeDB host address, username, and password. Clients communicate over HTTP using http://localhost:8001/mcp. You can also build images locally with podman or Docker.
Connecting to a local database under Linux breaks without the --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway flag. Passing host networking parameters is essential whenever TypeDB runs directly on your machine.
What it helps with
- run TypeQL read and write statements against TypeDB
- update knowledge graph schemas using natural language
- create and remove databases on a TypeDB instance
- manage user accounts and access credentials
Example prompts for the agent
- Show me all databases on the TypeDB server
- Create a database named
mydband define an entitypersonwith attributename - Query all persons inside
mydb

Questions about TypeDB
How do I install and run TypeDB MCP server?
Start the container with docker run -p 8001:8001 typedb/typedb-mcp:<version> --typedb-address <address> --typedb-username <username> --typedb-password <password>. Then add http://localhost:8001/mcp to your .cursor/mcp.json file.
What operations does TypeDB MCP support?
It handles TypeQL read, write, and schema execution. It also allows AI assistants to manage databases and handle user accounts.
How do I point the container to a local TypeDB instance on Linux?
Set your address to http://host.docker.internal:8000 instead of localhost. Pass --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway inside your docker run command.
