tempera — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Gives your agent persistent memory: it records sessions, finds similar past fixes by meaning, and brings them back when a task looks familiar.
claude mcp add tempera -- npx -y @astudioplus/tempera-mcpWhat tempera does
Tempera stores each coding session as an episode, indexes it, and pulls the relevant ones when you hit a similar problem. Retrieval is semantic, so a query about a login redirect can surface a fix from weeks ago. Episodes carry a utility score, and that score moves.
Feedback raises utility. Value then spreads across the similarity graph over several hops, and episodes chained into one multi-step task boost each other. A nightly dream cycle runs verification, decay, reflection, pattern detection, contradiction probing and template extraction. One call, tempera_brief(files, task_type?, domain?), lines all of that up against the files the agent is about to touch and returns pending ask-backs, a matching reasoning template and a calibration warning.
Decay depends on scope. Project-bound claims fade in roughly 70 days, language-level facts last around 3 years, universal ones never expire. Both tempera_retrieve and tempera_brief take cross_project=true, which lets transferable claims show up in other repositories. Older captures stay non-transferable until they are reclassified.
What it helps with
- recall how a similar bug was fixed last time
- reuse a step sequence that worked before
- drop advice that already failed
- carry language or library knowledge into another repo
- get clarifying questions for the files you are about to edit
Example prompts for the agent
- Search memory for how we fixed the login redirect before
- Run a brief on
src/auth/session.tsbefore I touch it - Look for similar episodes across all projects with
cross_project=true

Questions about tempera
How do I install tempera in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add tempera -- npx -y @astudioplus/tempera-mcp.
What does tempera do?
It captures sessions as episodes, indexes them, and surfaces similar past solutions to the agent. Helpful episodes rise in retrieval; unhelpful ones fade.
How is tempera different from plain project memory?
Knowledge is scoped: project conventions decay over months, language facts last longer, universal truths never expire. Transferable claims reach other projects when cross_project=true is set.
