strata · agenerationforwordz-tech — Claude Code MCP server for local AI memory
A self-hosted memory server: your notes and files stay on your own machine, and the agent searches by meaning.
claude mcp add --env STRATA_URL=<STRATA_URL> --env STRATA_API_KEY=<STRATA_API_KEY> --transport stdio agenerationforwordz-tech-strata -- npx -y strata-mcp-serverWhat strata does
strata gives any MCP-compatible agent a memory that survives the end of a session and never leaves your hardware. Every entry becomes a 768-dimensional vector, so a search for "new job" also surfaces what you wrote about switching careers. The embedding model runs locally through ONNX Runtime, takes roughly 100–150 MB of RAM and unloads itself after five idle minutes.
Real files can be attached to a thought — source code, documents, project archives. On disk they are grouped by device and month, and text files come back to the agent capped at 5 MB so the context window stays sane. Auto-tagging, duplicate detection and access tracking are included, so you can see which memories actually get used. Deleting requires an admin key; an agent cannot wipe your data on its own.
Version 2.2 adds a PostgreSQL plus pgvector backend for concurrent multi-agent writes, while SQLite stays the default for quick demos. Each agent gets its own key with read / write / delete / admin / kill permissions, and a global kill switch cuts every agent off from MCP, REST and /api/* — only a human admin can turn it back on. The repository is marked as superseded by SOLUM, and the author points new users there.
What it helps with
- find a note by meaning instead of exact keywords
- attach source files to a thought and hand the agent only what it needs
- give each agent its own key instead of sharing one
- cut every agent off from memory with a single switch
- import older memories under negative IDs
Example prompts for the agent
- Save a thought about the PostgreSQL migration and attach
server.py - Find everything I wrote about budgets and investments
- Show which memories nobody opened this month

Questions about strata
How do I install strata in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add strata -- npx -y strata-mcp-server. To pass a URL and key, use `claude mcp add --env STRATA_URL=<STRATA_URL> --env STRATA_API_KEY=<STRATA_API_KEY> --transport stdio agenerationforwordz-tech-strata -- npx -y strata-mcp-server`.
What does strata do?
It keeps notes and files on your own hardware and lets an agent search them by meaning. Entries are stored as vectors, and attachments sit in a file vault indexed by the thought they belong to.
How is this different from SOLUM?
The repository states that strata is superseded by SOLUM, which uses PostgreSQL with pgvector instead of SQLite and ships more tools plus fixes missing here. The author recommends new users start with SOLUM.
