tela — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Links your self-hosted Tela workspace to AI assistants for browsing and editing pages. Helps agents search team documentation and store project notes.
claude mcp add --transport http tela https://telawiki.com/api/mcpWhat tela does
The server hooks AI assistants straight into a Tela wiki instance. Starting with version 0.7, the MCP interface runs directly inside the Tela backend at /api/mcp over Streamable HTTP. Hosts like Claude Code, Cursor, or Zed talk to this endpoint over HTTP by supplying a personal access token in an authorization header.
For platforms limited to stdio transport, the repository supplies the tela-mcp bridge package. It forwards traffic without local tools. Missing TELA_BASE_URL or TELA_API_KEY variables will cause the process to exit immediately prior to the handshake.
Backend endpoints expose actions such as search, semantic_search, get_page, and create_page. Resources follow the tela://page/{id} format. All read, write, and administrative access checks remain enforced on the server.
What it helps with
- search team wiki articles using semantic search
- fetch Tela page content directly via resource URIs
- generate new knowledge base entries during coding sessions
- leave comments on existing documentation pages
Example prompts for the agent
- Run semantic_search in Tela to locate our production deployment guide
- Fetch the document at tela://page/19 and summarize its architectural points
- Draft a new wiki page in Tela containing release notes for this sprint

Questions about tela
How to install tela in Claude Code?
Run the following command to connect directly via HTTP: claude mcp add --transport http tela https://telawiki.com/api/mcp.
What does the tela MCP server do?
It exposes your Tela workspace to AI tools for reading and authoring content. Assistants can search workspaces, retrieve articles, generate new entries, and submit comments.
When should I run the tela-mcp npm package?
You only need the package for hosts that lack native Streamable HTTP support and require stdio. Modern environments can bypass the proxy and connect straight to the backend URL.
