RvtMcp — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
A local bridge from an MCP client to a running Revit session: 237 typed tools, a C# escape hatch, and optional ToolBaker tools of your own.
Open on GitHubWhat RvtMcp does
RvtMcp joins an MCP client to a Revit session that is already open. The .NET 8 server speaks MCP over stdio; a small add-in inside each supported release from 2022 to 2027 answers on localhost TCP up to 2024, then over a named pipe from 2025 on. Traffic never leaves the machine, and lengths at the tool boundary are millimetres.
Agents get 237 typed tools for everyday modelling work, plus a C# escape hatch when nothing in the set fits. ToolBaker is optional: it turns a pattern you repeat into a tool of your own running on the shared runtime. Family Editor authoring is not covered yet.
Setup is Windows only. The PowerShell script drops the add-in into every Revit it finds and places the server at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Bimwright\rvt-mcp\server\current\rvt-mcp.exe. Nothing will answer until a model is loaded and MCP is switched on in the ribbon under Add-Ins → RvtMcp; calling revit_get_current_view_info is how you tell the link is alive.
What it helps with
- read the active view and its type from a live model
- run a batch of edits inside one transaction
- reach an API corner the typed tools miss, through C#
- bake a repeated workflow into a personal tool
- wire an agent to Revit without sending data off the machine
Example prompts for the agent
- Call
revit_get_current_view_infoin the open model and tell me which view is active. - Install rvt-mcp for Claude Code on this machine, reading
AGENTS.mdfirst and previewing every change before writing. - Use rvt-mcp to list the elements in the active view and leave the rest of the model alone.

Questions about RvtMcp
How do I install RvtMcp in Claude Code?
Shut Revit down, pull the latest release archive with PowerShell and unpack it, then run install.ps1 -WhatIf -Client claude to read the preview. When it looks right, run install.ps1 -Client claude for real. Restart your client afterwards, load a model in Revit and switch MCP on in the ribbon.
What does RvtMcp do?
It hands an agent typed MCP tools for working with a live Revit model. The connection is local, so nothing leaves your machine.
What has to be running before the tools respond?
Windows with the add-in installed for your Revit version, Revit itself open on a model, and the MCP toggle in the ribbon switched on under Add-Ins.
