ris — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects AI clients directly to Austria's official RIS legal database without API tokens. Retrieves federal statutes, state regulations, and court rulings.
claude mcp add ris -- npx -y ris-mcp-tsWhat ris does
This server exposes Austria's Rechtsinformationssystem through its official Open Government Data API v2.6. It provides thirteen dedicated tools for searching federal statutes like ABGB alongside provincial legislation across all nine states. Queries run against public endpoints without credentials.
The implementation covers sixteen court jurisdictions, including the Supreme and Constitutional Courts. Long texts stream section by section via ris_dokument_abschnitt using character offsets so the context window remains clean. Node.js version 20.19.0 or higher must be present locally for npx execution.
What it helps with
- retrieve clauses from Austrian civil or criminal statutes
- look up rulings from the Constitutional or Supreme Court
- fetch regional laws across any of the nine provinces
- inspect legislative amendments and document revision history
Example prompts for the agent
- Find Austrian Constitutional Court rulings regarding freedom of expression
- Show section 1295 of the Austrian Civil Code ABGB
- Check the regional building regulations for Salzburg
