rekindle — Claude Code MCP server: context between sessions
A local SQLite MCP server that assembles project context when a session starts and saves it before compaction. Useful when you keep re-explaining where you left off.
claude mcp add rekindle -- npx -y rekindleWhat rekindle does
Rekindle covers three moments: session start, mid-session compaction, and wrap-up. The boot_report tool walks a pipeline — it reads the identity document, checks memory stats, pulls the latest checkpoint, lists open loops, and produces an orientation score. Everything lives in .rekindle/ inside your project: the SQLite database, an identity template, a continuity policy, a project registry, plus captures and transcript directories.
The PreCompact hook fires before compaction and keeps what would otherwise vanish — a parsed transcript, a raw Markdown capture, and a structured JSON snapshot of decisions and files. Captures can be read in three modes: summary, structured, or the full transcript excerpt, each with a different token cost. Both hooks are opt-in; a plain init installs neither.
Node.js 22 or newer is required. Without --global the hooks land in .claude/settings.local.json and only run for sessions started in that directory. With --global they go to ~/.claude/settings.json, which Claude applies everywhere — register the server at the same user scope, or it won't be present in every project where the hooks fire.
What it helps with
- reload project context at the start of a session
- keep reasoning chains alive through compaction
- locate the last checkpoint and open loops
- spot what the loaded context is missing
- keep a local session history with no external service
Example prompts for the agent
- Run
boot_reportand tell me what we were doing last time - Show the latest PreCompact capture in summary mode
- Open
.rekindle/identity.mdand update the project description

Questions about rekindle
How do I install rekindle in Claude Code?
Run npx rekindle init first, then register the server with claude mcp add rekindle -- npx -y rekindle. Hooks are separate: npx rekindle setup-hooks and npx rekindle setup-delivery.
What does rekindle do?
It is a session continuity MCP server. It builds an orientation report at startup, captures context before compaction, and delivers it at the next session start from a local SQLite database.
Does rekindle need API keys?
No. Storage is local SQLite, and the only prerequisite is Node.js 22 or newer.
