What OpenSOSData – US Business Entity Search does

The server hands your agent five tools. search_business_entity takes a name and a state and returns the entity ID, status, type, registered agent and address. check_entity_status tells you whether a business is active, inactive or dissolved. batch_search handles up to 10 entities at once across different states. Two more tools describe coverage: list_supported_jurisdictions and get_jurisdictions_for_region, the latter grouped by region such as northeast or southeast.

Records come from Secretary of State portals at query time rather than a stale database. Coverage spans the 50 states plus Washington DC, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. Every tool is read-only.

An OPENSOSDATA_API_KEY is required — the server will not run without one. Keys come from opensosdata.com, and signup includes 10 free lookups with no credit card. After that it is pay-as-you-go at $0.0314 per lookup, no subscription. There is also a remote option that skips installation entirely: https://mcp.opensosdata.com/mcp, with the key sent as a Bearer token in the Authorization header.

What it helps with

  • confirm a vendor is registered in the right state
  • check whether a company is still active before signing
  • screen a list of vendors in one pass
  • work out which registries to check for a multi-state business
  • find out whether Puerto Rico is covered

Example prompts for the agent

  • Is Stripe Inc registered as a corporation in Delaware?
  • Which jurisdictions should I check for a company operating across the Southeast?
