Nutrition MCP — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
A hosted server that keeps a food diary through chat: meals and macros, USDA and barcode lookups, history, and a CSV import from another tracker.
claude mcp add --transport http nutrition-mcp https://nutrition-mcp.com/mcpWhat Nutrition MCP does
Nothing runs on your machine. You hand the client https://nutrition-mcp.com/mcp, and the first connection asks for a sign-in: Google, or an email address with a password you set. The diary belongs to that account, so it survives reconnects.
The tools cover a normal day of eating. log_meal takes a plain description and splits it into calories, protein, fat and carbs, plus fiber, both sugar figures, saturated and trans fat, caffeine and free text notes; every value carries a note of where it came from. Generic foods come from USDA FoodData Central through search_foods and get_food_macros, packaged labels are read by lookup_barcode via Open Food Facts. For reading back there is get_meals_today, a single-date call and a range call capped at 31 days. Meals you repeat can be stored and logged again by name, and water, body weight and measurements have their own entries.
Switching trackers goes through start_meal_import. Pick the CSV, map its columns, look at the preview before anything is written. Watch the alcohol part. That tracking is off unless you enable it, and while it stays off the importer drops the column, so re-sending the same file later will not put those values back.
What it helps with
- log a meal and its macros from one chat message
- pull a packaged product's numbers from its barcode
- scale USDA values to the portion actually eaten
- move an old food diary over from a CSV export
- check what was eaten on a given day or over a range
Example prompts for the agent
- Log lunch: chicken pasta, 620 kcal, 40 g protein, 70 g carbs
- Search USDA for
chicken breastand scale the macros to my portion - Import my diary from
export.csv, it came out of my old tracker

Questions about Nutrition MCP
How do I install Nutrition MCP in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add --transport http nutrition-mcp https://nutrition-mcp.com/mcp, then sign in to an account on the first connection.
What does Nutrition MCP do?
It turns a conversation into a nutrition log: meals with macros and micronutrients, USDA and barcode lookups, history by day or by range, and imports of exports from other food apps.
Why was my alcohol column skipped during import?
Alcohol tracking is opt-in and turned off by default, and the importer ignores that column while it is off. Turn it on before importing, since running the same file again will not backfill it.
