monkeymcp — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Provides monkey species data, generated movement journeys, and behavioral logs to your AI client. Useful as a working sample server for testing tool calling.
claude mcp add monkeymcp -- docker run -i --rm docker.io/jamesmontemagno/monkeymcp:2.0.3What monkeymcp does
Built on .NET 9.0, monkeymcp exposes animal profiles and simulated movement paths through Model Context Protocol tools. It uses MonkeyService to fetch and cache species records, while MonkeyLocationService synthesizes travel tracks, health metrics, and behavior routines such as feeding or grooming.
The server provides four callable tools: GetMonkeys, GetMonkey, GetMonkeyJourney, and GetAllMonkeyJourneys. Aside from standard I/O communication, the project includes an alternative Server-Sent Events setup running over HTTP on port 3001.
Compiling from source code requires the .NET 9.0 SDK, so using the pre-built Docker container or the hosted Azure Functions address is the fastest way to get it running.
What it helps with
- test tool execution workflows with a structured mock dataset
- fetch species profiles and details by name
- generate travel coordinates and health stats for an animal
- simulate multi-point routes and daily activities for all monkeys
Example prompts for the agent
- List all available monkey records using the GetMonkeys tool.
- Retrieve the travel path and health log for a baboon with GetMonkeyJourney.
- Find profile information for a specific monkey using GetMonkey.
