mcp · augmnt — Claude Code MCP server: npm docs inside the chat
Feeds type signatures, prose docs and code examples for any npm package into the agent conversation. Useful when you would rather not open a browser tab.
claude mcp add --transport http mcp https://mcp.augments.dev/mcpWhat mcp does
The server answers the agent's questions about any npm package and hands back types, written explanations and snippets. Its documentation search runs on a BM25 index, so a natural-language question about middleware setup lands on the right heading instead of an empty result. Synonym clusters widen the match: a state-related word also picks up useState, createStore and similar names.
The primary tool is get_api_context. Next to it sit search_apis for keyword or concept lookup, get_version_info for comparing releases, get_migration_guide for moving between versions, diagnose_error for reading an error message, compare_packages for putting up to five packages side by side and scan_project_deps for checking package.json against outdated or vulnerable entries. A separate diagnostics tool reports server health.
Setting GITHUB_TOKEN raises the GitHub API ceiling while examples and docs are being fetched. Without it the server still runs, it just hits rate limits sooner. The only environment requirements are the ones implied by the install routes: a remote URL or a local start through uvx.
What it helps with
- look up a function signature in an unfamiliar npm package
- get a code example from a plain-language description
- spot what broke between two library versions
- trace the cause of a React error message
- audit package.json for stale dependencies
Example prompts for the agent
- Show me a React example of cleaning up inside an effect
- Build a migration guide for next from 14 to 15
- Compare zod, yup and joi on bundle size and dependencies

Questions about mcp
How do I install mcp in Claude Code?
Register the remote server with claude mcp add --transport http mcp https://mcp.augments.dev/mcp. Alternatively run it locally: claude mcp add augmnt-mcp -- uvx augments-mcp-server.
What does mcp do?
It gives the agent npm package types, explanations and examples, and also compares versions and packages, helps trace errors and scans project dependencies.
Why set GITHUB_TOKEN?
It lifts GitHub API limits while examples and documentation are being fetched. The server works without it.
