McpMux — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
McpMux runs a local gateway so several AI clients can use the same MCP servers. It helps keep server settings and credentials in one place.
Open on GitHubWhat McpMux does
McpMux is a desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It runs a local MCP gateway that Claude Code and other clients can connect to. Add servers from its built-in registry or configure your own; the app displays their tools, prompts, resources, and connection status.
Clients connect at http://localhost:45818/mcp. Credentials are encrypted in the operating system’s keychain, and OAuth tokens refresh automatically. Spaces keep servers, credentials, and permissions separate. You can map a folder to a Space and a Feature Set, but matching uses the exact path, so opening the project from a different path won’t match that mapping.
Feature Sets control which tools, prompts, and resources a client can access. Server changes sync to connected clients without a manual refresh. The app is built with Rust and Tauri 2.
What it helps with
- share MCP servers across multiple AI clients
- keep server credentials in the operating system keychain
- separate work and personal server setups
- assign different tool bundles to specific folders
Example prompts for the agent
- Use the connected GitHub tools to inspect this repository.
- For this project folder, use the database tools from the right Space.
- Show me the tools and resources available from connected MCP servers.

Questions about McpMux
How do I install McpMux for Claude Code?
Download the app from https://mcpmux.com/download, then add the gateway address http://localhost:45818/mcp to Claude Code’s settings.
What does McpMux do?
It runs a local MCP gateway that lets multiple AI clients use the same connected servers. Server settings and credentials are managed centrally.
How does McpMux choose tools for a project folder?
Map the folder to a Space and Feature Set. The match uses the exact path, so a different path needs its own mapping.
