Lumen — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
Lumen connects AI agents to a learning platform that builds courses and answers questions from lesson material. Use it to create a course from a learning goal or inspect how an agent reached an answer.
Open on GitHubWhat Lumen does
Lumen is an e-learning platform with an AI orchestration layer. It can turn a learning goal into a course, then provide a course-scoped RAG tutor whose answers cite lessons. Its MCP server makes Lumen tools available to AI clients.
The system uses sub-agents for retrieval, code execution, quiz creation and concept explanations. Agent steps and tool calls are logged, and course authors can review the build process. Retrieval is limited to the relevant course and passes through an access-control check.
Lumen lists support for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline and Zed. The MCP description says it exposes nine tools, though the full tool list is not available here. You’ll need to configure an MCP client; setup commands vary by platform.
What it helps with
- Build a private course from a learning goal
- Get lesson-based answers with citations
- Inspect the steps taken by an agent
- Create a quiz from course material
Example prompts for the agent
- Build a course on PostgreSQL basics and show me its outline.
- Answer this question using the course lessons and cite the relevant material.
- Show the steps and tool calls behind the agent’s answer.

Questions about Lumen
How do I install Lumen in Claude Code?
Lumen is available as an MCP server for Claude Code. Connect it through the MCP client settings; setup commands depend on the platform.
What does Lumen do?
Lumen supports AI-assisted course creation and learning through a RAG tutor that cites lessons. It also lets users inspect agent activity.
How does Lumen keep course retrieval scoped?
Retrieval is tied to a specific course and goes through a shared access-control check. This prevents chunks from private or cloned courses from leaking.
