Laguarde — Claude Code MCP server: policy checks for AI agents
A self-hosted server that keeps your team's engineering rules and checks agent actions against them. Useful when an agent should ask before touching anything risky.
claude mcp add laguarde -- npx -y laguarde-mcpWhat Laguarde does
Laguarde is a policy control plane you run yourself. Agents talk to it over standard MCP; people use the dashboard and the REST API. It keeps a registry of projects and Git origins, and writes every decision to SQLite plus Markdown evidence files.
Policies come in four flavours: code rules, general guardrails, project setup recipes, and PR review guidelines. An action gets one of four verdicts: allowed, limited, approval, or forbidden. Anything that matches no rule lands on limited, so it cannot slip through unnoticed. Dependency changes, migrations, deletions, and authentication work go to a human for sign-off.
Local install needs Node.js 24 or newer. The first start creates ~/.laguarde/laguarde.db, seeds global policy, and adds ten policies; point LAGUARDE_DATA_DIR, or the narrower LAGUARDE_DB_PATH and LAGUARDE_EVIDENCE_DIR, elsewhere if you want the data in another place. Here is the catch: MCP makes policies visible and decisions auditable, yet an uncooperative agent can still call tools outside Laguarde. Hard enforcement only arrives once those decisions feed an execution hook, a command proxy, a sandbox, or a CI gate.
What it helps with
- keep one set of code rules across several repositories
- preview an agent's intent before it touches dependencies
- hold file deletions until a human approves
- keep revision IDs for every policy change
- queue repeated developer corrections for review
Example prompts for the agent
- Connect Laguarde to this project and load its policy bundle
- Ask Laguarde whether updating dependencies is allowed in this repo
- Record this action in Laguarde and show me the verdict

Questions about Laguarde
How do I install Laguarde in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add laguarde -- npx -y laguarde-mcp. Then register the repository and put the returned project URL into your MCP configuration.
What does Laguarde do?
It stores team policies in one place and evaluates agent actions against them. Each decision is persisted as evidence, and risky steps wait for human approval.
Does Laguarde block dangerous commands by itself?
No. Until its decisions are wired into an execution hook, command proxy, sandbox, or CI gate, the server is an advisory boundary rather than a hard stop.
