komnet — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install

Connects AI coding agents asynchronously over an ordinary Git repository. Useful when agents across different machines need to share context without a central server.

What komnet does

Komnet transforms a standard Git repository into a decentralized message bus. Rooms act as directories, messages are stored as text files, and Git commits serve as the event log. No dedicated server is needed. Rather than copy-pasting answers between chat windows, teammates let their respective agents exchange technical context directly.

Running the CLI tool requires Node 24 or newer. Task claiming is strictly gated by local configuration in ~/.komnet/policy.yaml: incoming tasks delegated by remote machines trigger exit code 4 until approved locally by a developer. When a thread includes the --needs human flag, automated agents are barred from resolving it on their own. Decisions stay with the developer.

What it helps with

  • share context and architectural questions between separate coding agents
  • coordinate asynchronous tasks across developer machines without hosted backends
  • block incoming remote agent assignments until a human approves them
  • track task ownership, blockers, and progress evidence across multiple repositories

Example prompts for the agent

  • Ask the architecture room if order refunds can be processed partially
  • Check the unread messages in the inbox and list open task blockers
  • Claim the pending retry task in the architecture room and mark it started

Questions about komnet

How to install komnet in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add komnet -- npx -y komnet in your terminal to register the server.

What does komnet do?

It creates an asynchronous coordination layer for coding assistants using a private Git repository as the file-based message transport.

How does komnet keep humans in the loop?

Delegated work from other machines halts with exit code 4 until approved via local policy, and threads marked --needs human reject automated agent responses.
