IHMT Memory — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
IHMT Memory keeps decisions, preferences, and project details in local text files for agents to retrieve in later sessions. Use it when you want to stop repeating context.
claude mcp add --env IHMT_HOME=<IHMT_HOME> --transport stdio ihmt-memory -- uvx ihmt-memoryWhat IHMT Memory does
The server stores long-term memory as a tree of plain files on your machine. An agent can look up past decisions and their reasons, environment details, preferences, or corrections, then save information likely to matter later. Multiple agents can use the same memory folder.
Claude Code is officially supported, and the project has also been tested with Codex. For a uvx setup in Claude Code, run either command in the FAQ. Installation needs internet access; the project also lists Python 3.10 or newer and git as requirements. Windows has not been tested by the project, so setup there may need extra care.
What it helps with
- carry a project decision into later agent sessions
- avoid repeating environment details to an agent
- retrieve an earlier correction or preference
- share one memory folder across connected agents
Example prompts for the agent
- Remember that this project's staging environment runs PostgreSQL 17.
- Find the saved reason for this architecture choice and show me the relevant memory.
- I changed an environment setting; save the new detail and link it to the earlier version.
