Google News — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Search Google News, fetch regional top stories, and scrape article contents without an API key or a headless browser.
claude mcp add google-news -- npx -y google-news-scraper-mcpWhat Google News does
This MCP server exposes three tools to your assistant: search_news, top_stories, and get_article_text. The search supports standard Google syntax such as exact quotes and site: filters, along with timeframe windows like 12h or 7d. Instead of Google redirect links, it delivers resolved publisher URLs with titles, sources, and publication dates.
Powered by google-news-scraper, running it via npx requires Node.js 20.19 or higher. Because get_article_text inspects raw HTML directly, pages behind paywalls or sites reliant on client-side JavaScript will fail. Burst querying can also trigger temporary IP rate limits from Google.
What it helps with
- search recent headlines using operators and timeframe filters
- retrieve top national stories by country and language
- extract readable text, bylines, and timestamps from article URLs
Example prompts for the agent
- Search Google News for recent quantum computing articles from the last 7 days.
- Get the top stories in France right now in English.
- Find articles on techcrunch.com about AI funding this month and fetch the text of the latest one.

Questions about Google News
How do I install Google News in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add google-news -- npx -y google-news-scraper-mcp in your terminal.
Does this MCP server require an API key?
No API key or external service account is required. It extracts data directly via google-news-scraper.
What are the limitations of article extraction?
The get_article_text tool reads plain HTML, so articles behind hard paywalls or single-page apps rendering purely via JavaScript will return an error.
