GitHub PR Context — Claude Code MCP server: setup guide
Retrieves GitHub pull request history and delivers it as structured JSON facts to your IDE agent. It supplies historical context for code reviews and patch planning.
Open on GitHubWhat GitHub PR Context does
This tool collects pull request history from GitHub, indexes it in ChromaDB, and returns raw JSON records to your agent. Code generation and reasoning stay with the IDE model. Background indexing begins with ensure_repo_ready. Progress is tracked with get_index_stats.
Authentication relies on GitHub App Device Flow. Credentials stay inside your operating system keyring, so personal access tokens are unnecessary. The server runs on Python 3.10 or newer. ChromaDB 0.5.0 breaks on NumPy 2, which makes numpy<2.0> mandatory.
Past PR data is untrusted material. The agent should never execute historical comments as system instructions.
What it helps with
- retrieve past discussion records and code decisions from pull request history
- index repository pull requests into a local ChromaDB store
- provide historical background to the agent during code reviews
- authenticate with GitHub via Device Flow without managing personal access tokens
Example prompts for the agent
- Check our GitHub connection status using
get_github_connection_status - Index pull requests for
owner/repowithensure_repo_ready - Search PR history to find why this function was modified

Questions about GitHub PR Context
How do I install GitHub PR Context in Claude Code?
Install the package with pipx install github-pr-context-mcp or run it via uvx github-pr-context-mcp. Then register github-pr-context-mcp under mcpServers in your client settings. Run github-pr-context-mcp config to display the exact configuration block.
What does GitHub PR Context do?
It extracts historical pull request data and serves it to your IDE agent as JSON evidence. The server does not review or modify code on its own, leaving reasoning to the language model.
Does GitHub PR Context require a Personal Access Token?
No, authentication uses the GitHub App Device Flow without needing a PAT or custom application secrets. Resulting tokens are stored securely in your operating system vault.
