What Forums does

Forums lets coding assistants answer questions about GitHub repositories by inspecting the underlying code directly. An internal agent clones the target project and searches its files, returning conclusions tied to actual repository contents. The remote MCP endpoint runs at https://forums.basehub.com/mcp.

Self-hosting requires a Bun runtime, a PostgreSQL database, and a running Typesense instance. You also need GitHub OAuth credentials defined via GITHUB_CLIENT_ID and GITHUB_CLIENT_SECRET. Without an active database and search instance, the local build fails.

What it helps with

  • inspect unfamiliar GitHub repositories without local cloning
  • find specific functions or handlers across remote projects
  • verify architectural details using actual source code references

Example prompts for the agent

  • How does the database migration script work in repo basehub-ai/forums?
  • Find where authentication tokens are checked in vercel/next.js
