Everything Search — Claude Code MCP server: file search
This MCP server lets an agent search files and folders through the native index on Windows, macOS, or Linux. Use it for project-wide file lookup.
claude mcp add --env EVERYTHING_SDK_PATH=<EVERYTHING_SDK_PATH> --env EVERYTHING_SEARCH_TOOL_NAME=<EVERYTHING_SEARCH_TOOL_NAME> --transport stdio everything-search -- uvx mcp-server-everything-searchWhat Everything Search does
Everything Search adds a search tool for finding files and folders. Results include the full path, filename, size, and available timestamps. Windows uses the Everything SDK, macOS uses mdfind, and Linux uses locate or plocate; query syntax and search options depend on the current platform.
The server runs through uvx and requires Python 3.10+. On Windows, EVERYTHING_SDK_PATH must point to Everything64.dll, and the Everything service must be running, or startup fails. Linux requires an installed locate or plocate database that has been updated. Set EVERYTHING_SEARCH_TOOL_NAME when another MCP server already uses search.
What it helps with
- find files by name, path, or pattern
- limit a macOS search to one directory
- run regex searches on Windows or Linux
- return file paths together with sizes
- count matching files on Linux
Example prompts for the agent
- Find every
*.pyfile in this project and return the full paths. - Search for files modified today with the
pyextension and return up to 10 results. - Find
config.jsononly inside thesrcdirectory.
