eurostat-mcp-server — Claude Code MCP server: how to install
Connects coding agents to Eurostat indicators covering EU economics and trade. Helpful when querying regional NUTS slices or staging datasets for SQL analysis.
claude mcp add --transport http eurostat-mcp-server https://eurostat.caseyjhand.com/mcpWhat eurostat-mcp-server does
The server connects to the Eurostat catalogue through a hosted HTTP endpoint or locally via STDIO using npx. Assistants receive tools to search dataset identifiers, inspect theme categories, read dimension metadata, and filter NUTS geographical boundaries from whole countries down to local zones.
For deep analysis, entire tables can be staged onto a dataframe canvas through the SDMX bulk endpoint. Once loaded, assistants run read-only SQL queries with eurostat_dataframe_query and inspect schemas using eurostat_dataframe_describe.
Running eurostat_dataframe_drop fails unless EUROSTAT_DATAFRAME_DROP_ENABLED=true is supplied beforehand. Setting CANVAS_PROVIDER_TYPE=none completely disables the canvas tools, restricting the model to bounded preview slices.
What it helps with
- look up Eurostat series by keywords and theme folders
- filter demographic or economic indicators across NUTS boundaries
- pull industrial PRODCOM or detailed Comext trade tables
- run SQL queries on staged SDMX statistical datasets
Example prompts for the agent
- Search Eurostat for datasets covering youth unemployment across EU regions.
- Retrieve valid dimension values for NUTS 2 regions in dataset demo_r_d2jan.
- Download the trade dataset and run a SQL query across the staged table.

Questions about eurostat-mcp-server
How to install eurostat-mcp-server in Claude Code?
For hosted HTTP access, run claude mcp add --transport http eurostat-mcp-server https://eurostat.caseyjhand.com/mcp. For local STDIO operation, run `claude mcp add --env EUROSTAT_CLAMP_LIMITS=<EUROSTAT_CLAMP_LIMITS> --env MCP_LOG_LEVEL=<MCP_LOG_LEVEL> --env EUROSTAT_BASE_URL=<EUROSTAT_BASE_URL> --env EUROSTAT_COMEXT_BASE_URL=<EUROSTAT_COMEXT_BASE_URL> --env EUROSTAT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS=<EUROSTAT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS> --transport stdio eurostat-mcp-server -- npx -y @cyanheads/eurostat-mcp-server`.
What does eurostat-mcp-server do?
It gives AI assistants direct access to the Eurostat data catalogue, including trade, health, and population numbers. Models can inspect dimensions, download entire bulk datasets, and query tables with SQL.
How do you enable dropping tables from the dataframe canvas?
The eurostat_dataframe_drop tool requires setting EUROSTAT_DATAFRAME_DROP_ENABLED=true in your environment. Without this variable, table removal requests are rejected.
