deja-vu — Claude Code MCP server: session memory and setup

deja-vu searches coding agents’ session histories and brings useful past decisions into the current session. Use it to recover context instead of debugging an already solved issue again.

What deja-vu does

The MCP server indexes session histories across coding agents and retrieves relevant context for the agent you are using now. Search can include older sessions, along with files opened during work and command results. That makes it useful when you need to find how a similar issue was handled before.

Agents share one index, so a result from Codex can inform work in Claude Code or Cursor. Context can arrive when a session starts and after a command fails. Everything runs locally, without a model or server, and secrets are removed as the index is built. Semantic recall uses embeddings only when enabled. For Claude Code setup, run claude mcp add deja-vu -- npx -y @vshulcz/deja-vu; the command uses npx.

What it helps with

  • find an earlier fix in agent session history
  • recover why a past decision was rejected
  • carry context from Codex into Claude Code
  • check which files changed during a past session

Example prompts for the agent

  • Find how we fixed the connection pool error in an earlier session.
  • Recover why we rejected the previous approach.
  • Search Codex history for this task and bring the relevant context into this session.
