Codex Bridge — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Desktop application and background service connecting MCP clients to local directories, terminal tools, and coding agents. Designed for running automated tasks with manual approval.
Open on GitHubWhat Codex Bridge does
Codex Bridge combines a Swift desktop interface with a local daemon on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The server exposes a Direct Workspace to MCP clients such as Claude Code, letting them inspect local project files and apply code patches. Directory permissions and task history remain strictly on the host system.
When basic workspace tools fall short, the bridge delegates work to external engines like Codex or OpenCode. Sensitive actions require explicit local approval through pop-up cards. Configuration and active sessions stay local, and credentials go directly into the operating system keychain.
Windows environments require WebView2 Runtime before the interface launches. On macOS 14+, the build uses ad-hoc signing, meaning Gatekeeper stops execution until you permit it inside privacy settings.
What it helps with
- grant MCP clients controlled access to local source code
- execute shell commands and file patches with interactive approval
- route programming workloads to Codex or OpenCode agents
- manage tool tokens and project folders inside local storage
Example prompts for the agent
- Check git status in the registered project folder using Codex Bridge
- Apply the patch to update dependencies in the workspace
- Run the project test suite and return the terminal log

Questions about Codex Bridge
How do you install Codex Bridge?
Download the version 2.1.2 package from GitHub Releases: a DMG for macOS, Setup.exe for Windows, or .deb for Ubuntu. Launch the desktop app to start the background service.
What is Direct Workspace in Codex Bridge?
Direct Workspace lets connected clients read files, modify code with patches, and run terminal commands without launching full coding agents. Operations respect folder boundaries set in the desktop UI.
What are the system requirements for Windows and macOS?
Windows machines require the WebView2 Runtime component. On macOS 14 or later, you must grant permission for the ad-hoc signed executable in system security preferences.
