Awesome Copilot MCP Server — Claude Code MCP server: what it does
Serves GitHub Copilot customization files from the awesome-copilot repository to your agent over MCP. Handy when you want ready-made rules and prompts nearby.
claude mcp add awesome-copilot-mcp-server -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/microsoft/mcp-dotnet-samples/awesome-copilot:1.0.2026102300What Awesome Copilot MCP Server does
The server pulls customization files out of the awesome-copilot repository and exposes them to the agent through MCP. No manual copying of file contents into your project.
It runs in a container: docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/microsoft/mcp-dotnet-samples/awesome-copilot:1.0.2026102300. So Docker has to be installed and running before you connect it, otherwise the command never starts. The image comes from ghcr.io, which means that registry needs to be reachable.
The server ships as part of Microsoft's .NET samples for the Model Context Protocol. MIT licensed.
What it helps with
- pull ready-made Copilot customization files into the current project
- browse what rules and prompts awesome-copilot already collects
- wire an external source of customizations into the agent over MCP
- skip copying file contents out of the repository by hand
- compare your own rules against a public set
Example prompts for the agent
- connect the awesome-copilot MCP server and list the customizations it exposes
- find code review rules in awesome-copilot and add them to the project
- pull Copilot instructions for .NET work through awesome-copilot-mcp-server
