akb — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
akb gives AI agents a Git-backed knowledge base with hybrid search, documents, tables, files, and links between stored objects.
claude mcp add akb -e AKB_MCP_URL=<AKB_MCP_URL> -e AKB_PAT=<AKB_PAT> -- npx -y akb-mcpWhat akb does
akb is an MCP server for shared agent memory. It uses a PostgreSQL-native revision store for documents, tables, and files, then combines semantic retrieval with keyword search. A URI graph records relations between objects, so an agent can follow linked context as well as search terms.
The server exposes operations for writing, finding, browsing, and inspecting relations. The repository also ships plugins for Claude Code and Codex: akb-wiki imports sources and answers from the vault with citations, akb-sessions turns a coding session into structured notes, and akb-claude-code connects session hooks to AKB memory. Setup requires AKB_MCP_URL and AKB_PAT; without the server URL and token, the client cannot be configured.
What it helps with
- store project documents and files in a shared knowledge base
- retrieve notes with semantic and keyword search
- connect related records through a URI graph
- capture coding sessions as reports and follow-up tasks
- import content from a local file or external source
Example prompts for the agent
- Search the knowledge base for authentication decisions and show the related documents.
- Save this coding session as a report with decisions, ideas, and follow-up tasks.
- Import
README.mdinto the vault and answer questions from it with citations.

Questions about akb
How do I install akb in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add akb -e AKB_MCP_URL=<AKB_MCP_URL> -e AKB_PAT=<AKB_PAT> -- npx -y akb-mcp.
What does akb do?
akb connects an AI agent to a knowledge base over MCP. The agent can read and write documents, tables, and files, search their contents, and follow URI-graph relations.
What does akb need to work?
You need the MCP server address in AKB_MCP_URL and a Personal Access Token in AKB_PAT. The connection uses the akb-mcp proxy through npx.
