Expanding AI transparency in ads

Expanding AI transparency in ads

Google has rolled out new transparency tools for AI-generated advertising. Users on Search, YouTube and Discover can now check whether AI was used to create an ad through the 'How this ad was made' section in My Ad Center, accessible via the three-dot menu or info icon on the ad unit.

Advertisers are required to label AI-generated content. For ads created using Google's own tools, the label is applied automatically. For creatives produced with third-party AI services, manual labelling is available. Depending on local requirements, the label may appear directly on the ad.

Google embeds hidden signals such as SynthID into AI content for technical identification. In 2023, the company introduced a requirement to disclose synthetic content in political advertising. The new rules now apply across all ad inventory.

Existing policies prohibit misleading advertising regardless of how it was created. Advertiser verification and disclosure of who paid for ads remain mandatory.
