Expanding our defenses against financial scam ads

Google is rolling out its Financial Services Verification programme to the U.S. and Canada starting in early 2027. Advertisers promoting banking products—checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards—must now confirm that their operations are authorised by regulators before ads run.

The verification sits atop existing identity checks. Google says it screens ads through regulators and recognised registries; in the U.S., it will cross-reference the American Bankers Association registry, while in Canada it is negotiating with the Canadian Bankers Association. The company claims to be the first major ad platform to enforce regulatory authorisation at this scale. The programme already covers 42 countries and roughly 2 billion internet users.

Google has run this verification in the UK since 2021 and expanded it across the EU. In North America, more than 97% of financial ads already come from advertisers with verified identity. The rollout will be phased; Google plans to publish country-specific guidance—accepted registries, document requirements, onboarding instructions—before enforcement begins. Advertisers will receive notifications when verification is required.

For traffic arbitrage operators running campaigns on banking and finance offers in these geographies, the change means gathering regulatory authorisation documents in advance. Without them, campaigns will not launch.
