ship-learn-next — Claude Code skill: turn tutorials into action plans
Takes a transcript, article or tutorial and turns it into concrete steps through the Ship-Learn-Next loop: ship something, reflect, plan the next rep.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill productivity/ship-learn-nextWhat ship-learn-next does
The skill reads whatever file you hand it and pulls out the parts you can actually practise. Theory and background get dropped; lessons, principles and worked examples stay. Then it asks questions: what do you want to reach in 4–8 weeks, what does success look like, what could you put out into the world?
Every cycle runs through three phases. SHIP means making something real. LEARN is an honest look at what happened. NEXT is the plan for the following iteration. The first rep gets cut down to the smallest shippable version that fits in 1–7 days, with success criteria, action steps and reflection questions for afterwards. Reps 2–5 are sketched out, each adding one new element.
Only Read and Write are allowed, so the skill works on text and leaves your code alone. It pushes hard against endless planning: a vague goal like “learn X” comes back as “ship Y by date Z”. If you wanted a code review or a test run, look elsewhere.
What it helps with
- turn a video transcript into a list of concrete steps
- cut a big idea down to a first shippable rep
- write success criteria for a learning project
- plan the next iterations after the first result
- replace a vague goal with a deadline and an artifact
Example prompts for the agent
- Read
transcript.txtand build a Ship-Learn-Next action plan from it - Break this tutorial into a first rep I can ship this week
- Write the reflection questions for after rep 1

Questions about ship-learn-next
How do I install ship-learn-next in Claude Code?
Use the templates command: npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill productivity/ship-learn-next. Alternatively run npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill ship-learn-next -a claude-code. The skill file then sits at ~/.claude/skills/ship-learn-next/SKILL.md.
What does ship-learn-next do?
It converts learning material into Ship-Learn-Next cycles: what to ship, what to take from it, what the next rep should be. You get a 4–8 week goal, a first rep with steps and success criteria, and an outline of reps 2–5.
Which tools does the skill use?
Read and Write are the only ones allowed. That is enough to open your content file and save the plan.
