user-context · openai — Codex skill: what it does, how to install
Manages local user context, preferences, and onboarding state for the Public Equity Investing plugin. Runs strictly on explicit user request.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill user-context -a codexWhat user-context does
This skill provides the context storage foundation for the Public Equity Investing plugin in Codex. It initializes state files, inspects onboarding progress, saves durable investment preferences, and sets up optional recurring automations. Standard research workflows never invoke this skill automatically.
State lives under $CODEX_HOME/state/plugins/openai-monorepo/public-equity-investing/. The plugin maintains only two active files: user-context.md for durable notes and onboarding-state.json for scaffolding. Under the hood, Python scripts handle actions: init_user_context_state.py creates missing files, user_context_preflight.py returns a read-only JSON envelope, and reset_user_context_state.py moves active files into a timestamped backup folder.
The onboarding flow guides through four steps, ending with a hero-workflow chooser. Install this skill if you use the Public Equity Investing plugin regularly and want persistent local preferences.
What it helps with
- save durable preferences for Public Equity Investing workflows
- inspect onboarding progress and state files via read-only JSON
- reset local context with automatic timestamped backups
- configure scheduled automations on explicit request
Example prompts for the agent
- Initialize user context state for Public Equity Investing
- Inspect my saved investment preferences and onboarding status
- Reset local context state and back up existing files
