obsidian-bases · davila7 — Claude Code skill: .base files in Obsidian
A Claude skill that writes and edits Obsidian Bases files: views, filters, formulas and summaries. Handy when your notes live in an Obsidian vault.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill document-processing/obsidian-basesWhat obsidian-bases does
The skill teaches Claude to handle .base files — YAML documents that describe dynamic views over notes in an Obsidian vault. One file can hold several views, shared filters, formulas, property settings and custom summaries. Claude builds the whole file, not fragments of it.
The schema is spelled out: global filters built from and, or and not, the formulas, properties and summaries sections, and a list of views typed table, cards, list or map. Each view takes limit, groupBy, its own filters, an order list of properties and summaries. There is also a reference for comparison operators, note, file and formula properties, the this keyword, and functions from if() and date() to icon() and escapeHTML().
Formulas derive values from properties: arithmetic, conditionals, string and date formatting. Dates add and subtract with units such as 1M, 7d or 2h. The skill only produces YAML — if Bases are not enabled in your vault, Obsidian is what renders the result, so check that first.
What it helps with
- build a table view of notes filtered by status
- compute a sum or average over a note property
- group notes by tag and modified date
- lay out a card view for a reading list
- write a conditional formula that formats a price
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a
.basefile with a table view of every note taggedbook - Add a formula to the base that counts days since a file was modified
- Build a
cardsview grouped by thestatusproperty
