add-to-changelog — Claude Code command: write to CHANGELOG.md
Adds an entry to CHANGELOG.md following Keep a Changelog: version, change type, message. Handy when a release is close and the file still has nothing for it.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command project-management/add-to-changelogWhat add-to-changelog does
The command takes three arguments: version, change type and message. Change type is one of added, changed, deprecated, removed, fixed, security. If CHANGELOG.md is missing, it gets created with a standard header. Then the command finds or creates the section for that version with today's date and drops the entry under the matching heading.
Short flags work too: --added, --changed, --fixed. Under the hood it reads CHANGELOG.md plus package.json or setup.py when those exist, so a new version also updates the package version file. Read, Write, Edit and Bash are the tools it is allowed to use.
Make sure the version you pass is the one you actually plan to ship, because that same number lands in package.json. The command does not restructure an existing changelog — if your file has its own layout, the entry follows the command's rules, not yours.
What it helps with
- log a change in CHANGELOG.md without opening the file
- bootstrap CHANGELOG.md in Keep a Changelog format
- sort entries under added, changed, fixed and the rest
- bump the version in package.json or setup.py along with the entry
- stamp the release date on a version section
Example prompts for the agent
- /add-to-changelog 1.1.0 added "New markdown to BlockDoc conversion"
- /add-to-changelog 1.0.2 fixed "Bug in HTML renderer"
- /add-to-changelog --changed "Rewrote the data access layer"
